V – a story of angels and demons [Ch.5 Feels Like Kryptonite], by壞女人“By your command, my Lord,” the servant bows lightly and exits the great hall, closing the door behind him. Carlos stands up, and sits back down. What’s the hurry? He chuckles. It’s not like someone is waiting for me or anything. He sighs and snaps his fingers. A glass of finest cognac materialises in his hand and he lazily takes a sip of the fiery liqueur. The room is quiet except the sound of his own swallowing and the occasional snap of the burning wood in the fireplace. He closes his eyes and leans back against the back of the chair. He frowns slightly when a voice rings in his ears. You can be in a room with a thousand people, Carlos, but you can still feel so utterly alone. His eyes fly open. He moves his head to look around. Sure enough, there is no one but him in the golden luxurious hall. He closes his eyes again and tries to relax again. With his power, he can summon a million souls into the hall right now and they can have the wildest party in the history of the Underworld. But the voice is right, his loneliness will only be more potent among the sea of souls. He is Hades now, the ruler of the Underworld. He can have anyone and anything as long as he pleases. The only thing he cannot have is the one thing he craves most. He wants to go back to the days when he shares his life and stage with his brothers – David, Sebastien, and Urs. Who’d have thought a chance-meeting in a lifetime will create an unbreakable brotherhood forever? Carlos lets go of the crystal glass and extends his arms to his sides, with palms facing upwards. The falling glass stops to fall. The flames stop to dance. Everything around him begins to spin, faster, faster and faster, until the surroundings become a whirlwind of white, silver and gold. Carlos moves his wrists slowly so his palms turn downwards, as he does the whirlwind starts to change its colour to blue and black and red. An orchestra of clapping, cheering, and screaming flows into his ears and he smiles. Carlos opens his eyes and looks around the amphitheatre filled with expectant audience who are here to hear them sing. The lights are dimmed, the audience gradually become quiet. The orchestra starts to weave the introduction to a night no one involved will easily forget. Carlos feels the heat of the spotlight falls on him. The curtain slowly rises. His smiles widens when he meets the audience of the night. This is his moment. This is where he belongs. “Thinking of the good old times again, Carlos?” A soft voice breaks into his conjuration. Carlos stands on the stage, puzzled, as his fellow brothers stare quizzically at him when he misses his cue to sing. He shakes his head to fight the sudden dizziness. No! Don’t pull him from…The music slowly fades, farther and farther away, replaced by the sound of broken crystal, Carlos’s eyes snap open. He is still in the great hall in hell. Without an audience, without the spotlight, without his brothers. He looks down on the immaculate marble floor and sees the crystal glass shattered into pieces among a pool of cognac. He sinks into his chair and buries his face in his hands. A sobs escapes from his throat. He cannot take another heart-break anymore. A hand, a woman’s hand, caresses his head gently. “You know I had to stop you, Carlos. This is your punishment. You cannot live your dream again,” she tells him with a sigh, “Please, stop torturing yourself with these conjurations. I hurt every time you do this to yourself.” Carlos looks up at her, Greta, the woman whom he had loved for all his lifetimes. “Then let me dream!” he growls angrily. “You know I cannot,” she bites her lip. “Can’t, or won’t?” his eyes narrow dangerously. “Can’t,” she replies. “GO AWAY!” he roars, “GO AWAY AND GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!” “Carlos…” she tries to help him control his rising temper. “GET OUT!” he roars so loudly that the hall shakes from the vibration. Greta turns her back on Carlos and teleports herself to her own prison in Heaven. She hasn’t told Carlos that a spell has been cast on her as her punishment. Whenever he tries to relive his mortal days in any manner, she will be there to stop him. He has no idea how much it is hurting her to see his heart broken over and over again. He has no idea how her heart breaks even more each time when she kills his dream. But he doesn’t need to know. He already has more misery than anyone can bear; she is not going to add hers unto him too. If his hatred towards her makes him feel slightly better in any way, she will do anything to conceal him from the truth. Te amo para siempre.A ball of black fire spreads across Carlos’s body, surrounding him. He sits on his throne with a teasing tilt on his lips, looking nothing like a man who has just got his dreams shattered a while ago. He crosses his legs gracefully, an elbow on the arm of the chair, his cheek resting lightly on his fist. “Very well,” he declares to no one in particular. “If I cannot have my dream, no one is allowed to have their dreams.” He snaps his fingers and a photo of David Miller materialises between his fingers. “Starting with him,” he grins menacingly as the photo starts to burn under his stare. He telepaths Vanessa and issues her an order to see him immediately. The world will soon have a taste of his kryptonite.
